Diego Maradona spotted smoking Cohiba Cuban cigars

Diego Maradona smokes Cohiba Cuban cigars at World Cup

On Saturday the 16th of June, football legend Diego Maradona made world news as he was spotted smoking one of his Cohiba Cuban cigars whilst watching the World Cup match between his country's team Argentina against Iceland.

This made the papers because Maradona is seen breaking the law as he boldly takes out a pack of Cohiba Cuban cigars, places a lighter to the foot of it and proudly lights up his stogie, all whilst stood beneath a 20-foot sign which obviously states ‘Welcome to the tobacco free 2018 FIFA World Cup’.

When you watch football you expect some rules to be broken, a few yellow cards to be given, a couple of fouls and obviously an argument with the referee. But something which many weren’t expecting, was for someone to openly smoke a cigar in the stands, which rebelliously defies the smoking ban in place. Nevertheless, it seems to be a recurring thing, shown when we reported World Class basketball players Lebron James and Steph Currie smoking cigars after their matches (see our previous Cuban cigar blog post).

We wonder whether that nickname is wearing off after Maradona’s actions over the weekend. It certainly generated divided opinion on twitter. Many tweeters were calling him out as ‘stupid’ ‘@Faizalsyaban for smoking Cohiba cuban cigars in a public space and others saw the light-hearted side to it, as sports Journalist Jacqui Oatley tweeted saying ‘Diego Maradona a few yards away from us smoking a lit cigar while posing for snaps with fans. It smells quite nice #geezer’.

SO, WHO IS DIEGO MARADONA?

Diega Maradona aged 57, is a retired professional footballer and manager who is known as one of the world’s greatest footballers. Born in Lanús, Argentina, he began making a name for himself at the young age of eleven. You just have to look at one second of some of the sensational videos of Maradona on YouTube to recognise his mad foot skills and the way he commands the field. Since then, Maradona has had one of the most successful football careers and was given the name he’s known by ‘El Pibe de Oro’ which means ‘The Golden Boy’.

We might be a little bias, but we’re siding with Oatley here, after all there’s nothing quite like watching sport and smoking a stogie and for a man who’s made iconic history in Football we kind of applaud him for being such a baller.

So out of all the Cohiba cigars for sale, which one is Maradona smoking? If we were to take an educated guess, we’d say it’s something from the Cohiba Siglo series, such as the Cohiba Siglo III or the Cohiba Siglo IV cigar. Either would be an excellent choice if we say so ourselves. What do you guys think? Let us know in the comments section below.
