EGM Empyrean

Every name in the EGM Cigars collection carries a meaning. Some draw from language, some from nature, some from the deep well of Dominican heritage. But the Empyrean Line reaches further than any of them — past the fixed stars, past the sphere of the known, to a place where ancient philosophy and the art of the cigar meet on genuinely uncommon ground.

From the Greek: Empyros

The word empyrean comes from the Greek empyros — "in the fire." In Aristotelian and Ptolemaic cosmology, the Empyrean was conceived as the highest heaven, a realm lying beyond the sphere of the fixed stars. It was said to be occupied not by earthly fire, but by something purer: a luminous fire of energy and vital light. This was the seat of eternity and perfection — a place where movement ceased and harmony reigned.

It is a name that demands something of the cigars it represents. The Empyrean Line is EGM's most elevated expression — made in extremely limited quantities, using aged tobacco leaves, entrusted only to the most experienced rollers in the Cibao Valley. It does not sit alongside the main collection so much as above it, in the same way the Empyrean heaven sat beyond every other celestial sphere in the old cosmological maps.

The Cibao Valley, that rare and fertile region of the Dominican Republic, is perhaps the closest terrestrial equivalent to the Empyrean the cigar world has to offer. The valley's soil, climate, and the accumulated knowledge of its torcedores produce tobacco of exceptional depth. For the Empyrean Line, only that tobacco is used — and only after three years of ageing.

Three Names, Three Heavens

The Empyrean Line presents three vitolas, each named for a celestial idea. Taken together, Heraldos, Praxedes, and Paraisos trace a journey: announcement, devotion, and arrival.

Heraldos

Heraldos is Spanish for heralds — the messengers who precede and announce. In medieval cosmology, heralds were the intermediaries between realms, carrying declarations from one world to another. In the Christian celestial tradition, the angels themselves were the heralds of God, their name derived from the Greek angelos: messenger. The Heraldos is the entry point of the Empyrean Line — the smallest of the three, measuring 5⅛" with a 55 ring gauge in the Montesco vitola. It announces what is to follow.

There is also a literary dimension to the name that cannot be ignored. César Vallejo, the great Peruvian modernist, opened his 1919 debut collection with a poem called Los Heraldos Negros — The Black Heralds — in which blows from life arrive "as if God's hatred were being pumped" into the soul. It is a poem about strikes of fate, inexplicable and shattering. Vallejo's heralds are not triumphant messengers but dark ones, carrying the weight of existence. Whether or not the name carries that shade, the Heraldos sits at the threshold — and threshold moments always carry a certain gravity.

Praxedes

The name Praxedes carries the most specific and layered story of the three. Saint Praxedes was a 2nd-century Roman saint, daughter of the senator Pudens, sister of Saint Pudentiana. During the persecutions of the early Christians under the Roman Empire, she devoted her life to collecting the blood and remains of martyrs, preserving them so that nothing of the sacred would be lost. Her name derives from the Greek praxis — action, deed, practice. She is commemorated in the Basilica di Santa Prassede in Rome, one of the oldest churches in the city, its interiors still covered in some of the finest Byzantine mosaics in existence.

For EGM to name a cigar after her is to invoke both devotion and craft — praxis, after all, is not merely action but skilled and purposeful action refined through practice. The Praxedes is a Piramide, the most technically demanding vitola in any roller's repertoire. Its tapered head requires exceptional precision to construct; a poorly made Piramide betrays itself immediately. To name this format Praxedes — after a woman whose life was defined by careful, reverent, skilled practice — is an act of considered naming. At 5¾" with a 57 ring gauge, it is the broadest cigar in the line.

Paraisos

Paraisos is the plural of paraíso — paradise. Not one paradise, but many. The word's journey is remarkable: from the Old Persian pairidaeza, meaning a walled garden or enclosed park, it passed into Greek as paradeisos, then into Latin as paradisus, and from there into every European language. In the original Persian, paradise was a very earthly thing — a place of cultivated beauty, enclosed and tended. Only later did the word ascend to the theological.

EGM's Paraisos uses the plural deliberately. The Empyrean, in Ptolemaic cosmology, was itself understood as one of many nested heavens — spheres within spheres, each more refined than the last. Paraisos honours that layered vision. It is the tallest and most slender of the three vitolas, measuring 6¾" in the Torre Iznaga format — named after the 19th-century watchtower in the Valle de los Ingenios, Trinidad, Cuba, once the tallest structure in the Caribbean, built to survey a valley of extraordinary richness. For the longest cigar in the Empyrean Line, the name is exact.

The Tobacco

What gives the Empyrean Line its authority is not only the philosophy behind the names but the rigour behind the blend. All three vitolas are constructed identically, from a recipe that makes no concessions to economy.

The wrapper is a Corojo 2006 shade-grown leaf from the Dominican Republic — a seed with Cuban ancestry, adapted and cultivated over decades for the conditions of the Cibao. Shade growing slows the leaf's development, producing tobacco that is silkier in texture and more restrained in combustion than sun-grown alternatives. The result on the draw is a wrapper that contributes refined, creamy notes without overwhelming the blend beneath.

The filler is where the Empyrean Line declares its true ambition. Criollo 98 and Piloto Cubano — both aged for three years before rolling — are the dual pillars of a blend that delivers medium-full strength with exceptional complexity. Piloto Cubano, one of the oldest Dominican seed varieties with direct lineage from Cuban Vuelta Abajo stock, lends earthy depth and an almost mineral quality to the smoke. Criollo 98, developed in the late 1990s as a disease-resistant variety, has since become a benchmark filler for its balance of body and nuance. Together, across three filler positions, they create a smoke of layered and unhurried character.

Three years of ageing before rolling is not a detail. It is a commitment. Aged tobacco has shed the harsh volatile compounds that characterise young leaf; it burns more evenly, draws with less resistance, and reveals complexity that raw tobacco cannot access. That EGM chose this for every component of the Empyrean filler speaks to the line's founding intention.

The Three Vitolas

The Empyrean Line is not an everyday cigar. It was never intended to be. It is for the moments when the ordinary horizon will not do — when you need something that reaches, as the ancient cosmologists imagined their highest heaven, beyond the sphere of the fixed stars, into a purer light.

Those who have smoked through the main EGM collection will understand, from the first draw of any Empyrean vitola, that they have entered different territory. The tobacco is older, the rolling more demanding, the quantities more finite. The names — Heraldos, Praxedes, Paraisos — remind you that you are not simply smoking a cigar. You are participating in an idea.
